Moving contractors to employees: what needs to change?

A practical handover checklist for your hiring team.

Treat the move as a new employment arrangement

Moving a contractor to an employee arrangement changes more than the payment method. Start with the person’s location, working arrangement and intended employer. Have the classification and any historical exposure assessed separately from the new EOR proposal.

Deel and Remote describe contractor and EOR services as separate products. A contractor-management fee should therefore never be used as an EOR price in your comparison.

Agree the offer before scheduling payroll

Prepare the proposed salary, working hours, duties, start date and benefits. Ask the provider to explain the employment contract, employer contributions and deductions for that individual. Agree how the candidate will receive and understand the offer.

The contractor agreement and the employment contract need an orderly handover. Ask a qualified local reviewer about notice, final invoices, intellectual-property provisions and any restrictions before you promise a date.

Make the handover a shared checklist

Nominate an owner on your team and an owner at the provider. Ask for dependencies and deadlines, including identity checks, signatures, payroll cutoffs and the first payslip. A sales estimate for onboarding is not confirmation that the specific person is ready to start.

  • Confirm the legal employer’s name.
  • Check the end date of the contractor arrangement.
  • Agree the first payroll date and funding deadline.
  • Explain benefits enrolment and support contacts to the employee.

Check what happened after the switch

Review the first invoice and payslip against the quote and offer. Record unresolved differences and confirm who will correct them. Keep the old and new arrangements in the employment record; a change of platform does not itself resolve historic questions.
