EOR buying guide

Switching & leaving an EOR

Plan notice, employee continuity, final pay and deposit release before signing.

The decision you are making

There are two relationships to unwind: the provider service and the employment. Plan both before signing, especially when you may later move employees to your own entity or another EOR.

Separate service cancellation from employment end

A monthly subscription does not set the employee’s lawful notice or final pay. Ask for the sequence of approvals and communications. Confirm who can notify the employee, the last working day, legal employment end and final payroll date.

  • Service commitment, renewal and cancellation notice.
  • Employee notice, final employment costs and benefits.
  • Operational lead time for the provider’s legal review.

Plan a transfer as a project

A move may involve new contracts, a new legal employer and changes to benefits or payroll timing. Request a person-by-person plan for continuity of service, accrued leave, immigration and employee communications. Do not assume a migration slogan describes the legal transfer route.

  • Confirm the employment route and consent process.
  • Record balances, documents and unresolved tickets.
  • Agree how the first payroll with the new employer will work.

Follow the remaining money

Ask when a deposit becomes eligible for release, which invoices must be settled and whether unresolved claims delay the refund. Record the expected currency and payment method. Keep enough access to reconcile the final statement.

  • Start the refund clock from a defined event.
  • List final charges and any continuing obligations.
  • Obtain a closing statement and document-export timetable.

From the research: Deel

August 2026 help promises refund within 60 days after termination is fully completed and all invoices settled; termination itself may take up to 60 days. This is not 60 days from the request. ACH settlement may add seven business days. Final invoices must normally be paid first unless the deposit exceeds the final invoice; bank-currency conversion can change the refund amount.

From the research: Teamed

Switching page describes a named team, roster/payroll/benefit-data checklist, parallel checks and cutover over several weeks depending on notice and clean data. Although a headline says no re-onboarding, its FAQ requires new local contracts and sometimes termination/re-hire. Service history and benefits are preserved only where local law permits, with unavoidable changes disclosed for written acceptance.

From the research: Remote

EOR termination requests require legal/agreement review before communication to the worker; Remote may lead or join local conversations and flags extra legal costs. No universal turnaround is promised. Outgoing transfer to own entity/another EOR is documented as employee resignation through platform, not automatic preservation of tenure/benefits. Equity responsibilities shift at transfer; post-employment option exercises may still require Remote tax handling when vesting occurred during employment.

Take this into your provider call

What happens to employment, accrued benefits, data and our remaining funds if we leave?

Give each shortlisted provider the same scenario and ask for the answer in the documents you will sign. Record the owner, any extra cost and what remains to be agreed. That makes the final comparison practical for HR, finance and the employee.
